Experts in diversity can enter the UK on skilled work visas. Additionally, the Home Office protects the pathways for poets and bloggers on the list of protected occupations to apply for visas.

According to The Telegraph, professionals with expertise in diversity and inclusion can enter the UK on skilled work visas.

On a list of protected jobs, the Home Office has also protected the pathways for applying for visas for those who work as poets and bloggers.

With a tightening on work visas announced earlier this year as net migration approached one million, Labour has made addressing migration one of its top priorities.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper promised to make sure the immigration system was “linked to skills and training.”

However, detractors claim that rather than concentrating on bringing in people who will boost the faltering economy, ministers are defending the wrong occupations.

A temporary list of “shortage” occupations was created as part of the “crackdown” that was announced in May, defining which occupations would remain eligible for skilled work visas.

The “equality and diversity manager” is one of these positions. These positions have gained controversy in recent years for promoting ideas like “white privilege.”

The Civil Service alone has spent £27 million in taxpayer funds on diversity officers in a single year, and the profession has been called a “plague” on the public sector. NHS trusts spend more than £13 million annually on employee compensation for diversity officers.

These positions fall under the “human resources and industrial relations officers” skilled visa code.

Prior to Labour outlining its proposals in the immigration white paper, the Government website published an enhanced definition of what this category entails in April.

The job titles “equality and diversity officer,” “human resources adviser,” and “recruitment consultant” are listed in the updated definition.

Reform UK MP Lee Anderson told The Telegraph: “This country’s work-related immigration standards have never been lower, and the innumerable pledges to improve the system are still being broken.

“The system, which benefits everyone but hard-working Britons, costs taxpayers billions, and worsens the housing crisis and strain on public services, has been widely exploited thanks to our soft-touch immigration policies.”

Ms. Cooper has outlined a strategy to reduce the amount of jobs that qualify for a skilled worker visa in order to curb net migration, which skyrocketed to a record 900,000 in 2023 under the Tories.

Certain jobs that were considered skilled and open to visa applicants will no longer be eligible due to changes that will go into effect on July 22.

Social media influencers and magicians are examples of occupations that were once considered skilled labour during the years with the highest immigration rates.

Many low-skilled positions will be eliminated, although others have been shielded by being added to a short-term shortage list. Skilled work visas are still available to anyone who possess these abilities.

Poets and bloggers are protected by this list since they fall within the visa category for authors, writers, and translators.

A 2022 assessment by the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre found that the median income for a freelance writer was £7,000. This is less than the £12,570 personal allowance for income tax, even though it is merely the median.

“The UK does not need to import poets and bloggers because it is the country with the richest literary tradition in the world, home to literary giants like Shakespeare and PG Wodehouse,” Mr. Anderson stated.

“We urgently need people who will directly contribute to our economy and public services, like doctors, builders, and entrepreneurs.”

The current version of the temporary shortage list will remain in effect until December 2026, at which point it will cease to exist. The migration advisory council will examine the positions on the list, though, and may determine that they are significant enough to the UK to provide access to a skilled work visa.

In a letter dated July 2, Ms. Cooper asked the committee to conduct this evaluation in order to make sure that shortage professions in the future were justified by being “crucial” to the implementation of UK industrial strategy.

An interim, conditional, and time-limited temporary shortage list would ensure that the immigration system functions better for the UK, with foreign recruiting only offering assistance when it is absolutely required, according to a Home Office spokesperson.

Each industry must have a workforce strategy in place to train UK workers or risk losing access to the immigration system, according to the independent migration advisory council, which will assess the list’s vocations, salaries, and benefits section.

“The current list of HR managers and directorates includes managers of equality, diversity, and inclusion; this will be reviewed.”
