The Home Secretary affirms the introduction of new legislation requiring proof of social value prior to ILR application.

According to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, she intends to enact new legislation requiring immigrants to demonstrate their social value before being granted Indefinite Leave to Remain, or established status in the United Kingdom.

In addition to proving they have a job and can afford to reside here, foreigners will also need to demonstrate their integration and “contribution to the local community.” In an exclusive interview with The Sun, she stated that this can involve serving as a school governor or volunteering for a charity. Whether the time frame for claiming ILR would be extended from five to ten years was not mentioned during the conversation.

In a significant policy shift, the Home Secretary expressed her desire to strengthen regulations pertaining to those seeking Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK, echoing the immigration position of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.

“That migration has happened at a very, very rapid pace,” she said. I completely get why people are worried about it. It is a good thing that we require lawful migration. People who wish to come and work in our nation have always been welcomed. However, I believe that there is more to be done than just living and working here, and that is to ensure that people are contributing to their larger community and society.

She specifically used the Far Right’s danger as justification for Labour’s need to control immigration.

“I think securing the border is fundamental to holding the country together,” she told The Sun. I am aware that our nation will become even more divided if I am unable to resolve this situation. There is a growth in the Far Right. That, in my opinion, is a risky time for the nation. Since the cost of not delivering here would be far worse for the nation I love, I am forced to deliver.

According to her, ministers are considering ways to guarantee that stay-on indefinite leave “is linked not just to the job you are doing,” but also “the wider contribution you are making to our communities.”

She has mandated studies of the Modern Slavery Act and the European Convention on Human Rights regarding unlawful migration.

Through a variety of initiatives, the Home Secretary has promised to reduce the number of migrants.
