UK Care Worker Visa Crackdown

UK Care Worker Visa Crackdown: Migrant care workers are thinking about leaving the UK since the government has made immigration regulations stricter.

The UK government wants to make it difficult for migrant workers to stay in the country for good. This might lead to a staffing shortage at care homes for the elderly, where one in three workers is from another country, according to Reuters.

If the proposed changes go through, care workers will have to wait 15 years to get permanent residency. A lot of people are now talking about leaving the country, even some who thought they were close to getting “indefinite leave to remain” (ILR) under the present five-year norm.

The government of Prime Minister Keir Starmer is working to calm voters’ fears by lowering the number of people who move to Britain. Nigel Farage’s populist Reform UK party has been at the top of opinion polls for more than a year because of their tough discourse on immigration.

Some economists and businesses in the care sector warn that a 15-year wait for ILR would make Britain less appealing than places like Australia or Canada, where foreign carers can get residency after two or three years.

But the government claims that settling hundreds of thousands of people who migrated to Britain in the last few years to fill jobs in the health and care sector would be too expensive and would hurt the economy. ILR gets rid of visa renewal fees and gives people access to social benefits.

Kuldeep Singh, an Indian citizen, manages a care home in southern England. About two-thirds of his staff, who cook for and care for elderly and disabled people, were born outside of the United States.

Singh thought he would be able to get ILR in 2028 after starting work in the field in 2023, but now he would have to wait until 2038. He has put off buying a house and thinks he could simply travel to another nation if he needed to.

Singh added, “There are always not enough health and care jobs in every country.” “I know it’s hard to start over in a new country, but how many people are going to wait 15 years?”

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO RELY ON LOCAL WORKERS TO FILL SHORTAGES

A particular visa for care workers, nurses, and doctors brought some 616,000 professionals and their families to Britain between 2022 and 2024. Between 2027 and 2029, over 384,000 people are estimated to be able to get ILR.

The government has made it harder to hire people from other countries because of rising numbers and what it calls rampant fraud in the care visa system. However, care companies can still hire people who already have visas in the UK.

In other areas, rules are also getting stricter. For example, workers in care will have to wait the longest, with a 10-year ILR timeframe and a requirement to speak English well.

The left-leaning IPPR think tank says that at least 1.35 million people across the immigration system might be affected. This includes talented workers on visas, who as a group are good for the economy.

The interior ministry argues that without the lengthier deadlines, roughly 350,000 low-skilled workers and their dependents will cost the government nearly 10 billion pounds ($13.6 billion) in public services and benefits, including pensions, throughout their lifetimes.

Jonathan Portes, who teaches economics and public policy at King’s College London, said, “at best, this estimate is misleading,” because the rule change would not save that much money unless “every single person” in the prediction left the nation.

The British interior ministry did not answer Reuters’ demands for a comment.

International workers have been filling in for UK workers in the care sector for a long time. The average full-time UK income in 2025 will be £39,000, which is significantly below the £20,000 to £25,000 a year that care workers currently earn. But Singh believes that same parameters can be appealing to foreign workers if the employment comes with visa sponsorship that lets them travel to Britain.

He argues that a lot of British workers look for other jobs since they don’t see much opportunity of moving up in the field and think the salary is too low.

Migration rules in care may have effects in other areas.
There are already almost three times as many job openings in the sector as there are in the rest of the country. This is an issue for the National Health Service when it can’t send patients to care homes, and it’s a big problem for Britain’s ageing population.

Tushar Shah, who manages six care homes, claimed that some staff were thinking about leaving. Haris Khan, who runs four care homes, said that there has been a “visible drop” in international applicants from the UK since the government announced its plans.

Care home owners claimed that nurses not having to meet the extended ILR criteria after warnings of staff shortages could make some nurses leave their professions in care.

Portes added that the crackdown on care workers would also send a message to foreign workers in higher-paying jobs.

He remarked, “This will hurt our ability to attract the best and brightest.”

People in Starmer’s centre-left Labour Party are likewise not satisfied. Neil Duncan-Jordan, a member of parliament, told Reuters that the change would be “grossly unfair.” Angela Rayner, Starmer’s former deputy, called it “un-British.”

The government believes it needs to control immigration, and that limiting foreign workers would make care homes pay more to hire local workers. But that might make care homes more expensive for private patients and local councils that help pay for them.

Singh is worried about what any change would mean for his family, including his daughter when she turns 18 and is no longer a dependent. He also knows that Farage of the Reform Party has promised to stop migrants from receiving permanent status and benefits altogether.

Khan added, “This is a slow bleed.”
