Sunday is the last 24 hours before major changes to the UK Immigration Rules, presented to Parliament as HC 259 on 9 July, take effect at 00:01 BST on Monday, 3 August 2026.
The amendments establish the necessity for Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for nationals of Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain across the UK, add to the list of required documents for 30 unique Appendix routes and alter income thresholds for the Global Business Mobility (GBM) routes.
However, while airlines will not be compelled to check ETA approvals until December, those without an approval risk being refused boarding by check-in workers under existing carrier-liability laws.
Agents at airports contacted by this magazine said they have received advice from the UK Border Force to begin ‘advisory checks’ from 3 August, indicating anecdotal refusals are expected even in the grace period.
Middle Eastern carriers Emirates and Qatar Airways have already adjusted their online check-in portals to include an ETA field.
GCC-based consultants are scrambling to submit visitor and GBM applications under the pre-change regime that allows biometrics on arrival for stays under six months, said Corporate immigration advisers, who add there has been an increase in same-day filings.
Fingerprints must be submitted in advance via the UK Immigration: Monday ID Check software, which is now rated 2.8 stars in Apple’s app store, due to frequent failures to collect images on Android smartphones.
The Rule revisions also increase going rates for some sponsored-worker codes; a senior sales executive on the GBM service supplier route must now earn at least £51,200 (up from £48,100).

Important note: applications filed electronically before midnight London time on 2 August will be considered under the old provisions even if biometrics are submitted after that.
