What we know about the proposed to UK driving licence changes

UK Driving Licence Changes: Viral rumours on social media falsely suggested that drivers over 70 will have to re-take their driving exams under new laws.

Under the current proposals drivers over 70 will be subject to required eyesight tests every three years but would not have to take a complete retest.

The proposed regulations were created as part of a road safety strategy and will replace the present self-declaration method for driver vision standards.

Ministers are also considering a minimum six-month gap between theory and practical examinations for trainee drivers to enhance road safety.

Proposed trainee restrictions would minimise road accidents among drivers under 25, who accounted for 24 per cent of fatal and serious collisions in 2024.
