The UK government has a list of visa nationals. Citizens of countries not on the list can visit without a typical visitor visa for up to six months.
Americans, Canadians, Australians, Japanese and most Gulf and European nationals can enter the UK without a visa for short stays.
Irish nationals, under the Common Travel Area arrangement, enjoy a special exemption from requiring a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation to enter the UK.
This is under rules that differentiate between those who require a visa, those who simply require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), and those, notably Irish citizens, who require neither.
According to Vanguard, under the UK’s current entry framework, people whose nationality is not on the government’s list of “visa nationals” can generally visit for up to six months without applying for a full visitor visa in advance, for purposes such as tourism, family visits, business meetings or short courses.
Countries that can visit the UK visa-free
The UK government says that visa requirements for visits to the UK may vary based on the traveller’s nationality. If they do not require a visa, they will:
Need to apply for an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) which allows them to come to the UK for up to six months
Can visit the UK without a visa or an ETA for a period of up to six months
The nationalities confirmed as eligible are citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, who can all travel without a visitor visa but must get an ETA before they leave.
Singaporean and South Korean passport holders also qualify for visa-free short stays and are subject to ETA rules. It also includes other countries in the Middle East.
Citizens of the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia can visit the UK for a temporary stay without a typical visitor visa, as long as they meet the relevant ETA conditions.
From Asia: Malaysian and Bruneian nationals (both visa free).
In South America, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico are among the nations whose passport holders can enter the UK for short visits without a visa in advance, although Brazilian residents may still need an ETA before they board.
Israel is likewise one of the non-visa nationalities entitled to stay for up to six months.
European Travellers and the Irish Exceptionality
Many European citizens including the French, Germans, Italians, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Belgians, Swedish, Norwegians, Danes, Finnish, Austrians, Swiss and Polish can visit the UK without a standard visitor visa for short visits.
Irish citizens are a separate category under the Common Travel Area provisions. They are the only nationality that do not need any type of pre-travel authorisation when they visit the UK – they are uniquely exempt from the tourist visa need and the ETA requirement.
As the absence of a visa requirement does not necessarily indicate that further travel documents than a valid passport are not required, travellers from all eligible countries are recommended to verify whether the ETA requirements apply to their particular nationality before booking.
UK affirms nations that need entrance permission for visits
Recall that the UK has confirmed visa requirements for nationals of over 100 countries including Nigeria and India.
Some tourists from China and Taiwan will be exempted under the new immigration requirements.
Visitors travelling to the UK for a short-term stay must apply for entrance clearance as part of the UK’s border controls and regulations.
The digital permit costs £16, is valid for up to two years and allows for multiple entry visits of up to six months duration each.
British dual nationals may be stopped from flying if they do not have a UK passport or an expensive ‘entitlement certificate’.
