Migrant work visa licence cancellations double. In the first year of this government, more than twice as many licenses were cancelled as the previous year, demonstrating that genuine steps were taken to secure our border.
As ministers continue to get their hands dirty and seek practical ways to defend our border, a record number of firms have been prohibited from sponsoring foreign workers as part of a crackdown on immigration system abuse.
More than twice as many licenses permitting businesses to hire migrant workers were revoked between July 2024 and June 2025 (1,948) as during the preceding 12 months (937).
In addition to underpaying domestic workers and taking advantage of migrant employees who depend on their jobs to remain in the country, many of the employers had been using work visas to help migrants get around immigration laws.
According to research, the industries with the highest rates of abuse include adult social care, hospitality, retail, and construction.
Sponsor revocations for this year are predicted to surpass the record high once more based on current patterns. Only 261 and 247 licenses were revoked during the same time period in 2021–22 and 2022–23, respectively, before this spike in compliance activity.
This is a part of the government’s efforts to curb high migration and abuse of our border system. This entails extending penalties against unscrupulous employers, such as monetary fines, orders to shut down businesses, and possible legal action.
It comes after the UK announced earlier this week that it will stop issuing visas to nations who do not comply with the return of migrants who have no legal right to be in the country. As part of its Plan for Change, it is more proof that the government will go to whatever lengths to achieve the desired decrease in migration.
In response to the false assurances given to migrants travelling perilously in small boats that they would be able to find employment in the UK, the government has also increased the number of unlawful working arrests by 51% from the previous year.
This government has also seen a sharp increase in the number of persons removed who don’t belong here, with 35,000 removed, 13% more than during the same time last year. With the highest level of NCA enforcement activity ever recorded, efforts to dismantle the gangs at their source are likewise proceeding quickly.
Mike Tapp MP, the Minister of Citizenship and Migration, stated:
The harshest penalties must be applied to anyone who misuse our immigration system.
We will not think twice about prohibiting businesses from hiring foreign workers when doing so in order to undercut British workers and take advantage of weaker employees.
I have a clear message for dishonest employers: these deplorable actions will not be accepted.
More employers are being held accountable for violating the immigration laws as a result of improved data and intelligence sharing between the government and law enforcement.
The frequency of licence revocations has increased dramatically as a result of a new strategy that was hitherto largely dependent on physical compliance visits.
Companies have had their licenses withdrawn for a variety of rule violations, including:
- underpayment of employees
- allowing people to enter in order to get around immigration laws
- not completing the work that was promised
