The UK government has issued immigration guidelines explaining who can sponsor an Adult Dependent Relative Visa UK application and bring an eligible adult family member to Britain.

Under the UK Immigration Rules, sponsors must meet specific requirements, including being a British citizen, settled in the UK, having protected status or being a specified EEA national with approval under Appendix EU.

The applicant must need long-term personal care for everyday tasks because of age, sickness or disability, and such care must be unavailable or unaffordable at home.

The UK government has published the rules for sponsoring an adult dependent relative to Britain under its Immigration Rules Appendix Adult Dependent Relative, including who can sponsor, who can apply and what conditions must be completed before arrival.

The regulations said an applicant must be at least 18 years old and require long-term personal care because of age, disease or disability to do everyday duties.

And crucially, that care has to be unavailable or unaffordable in the country where the person is living at the moment.

UK: Who Can Sponsor an Adult Dependent Relative?

The UK government listed the sorts of people who can act as sponsors for an adult dependent relative:

1. A British Citizen

2. A person living in the UK.

3. Someone who has protection status in the UK.

4. An EEA national mentioned in Appendix EU with permission;

The sponsor must also prove they can house, support and care for the applicant without using public funding.

UK Adult Dependent Relative Visa: Key Conditions and Application Routes

All applicants must get entrance clearance before going to Britain. You cannot come to the UK and make an application from within the UK under this way.

An adult dependant relative’s partner can also apply under the same method, but only if they are the partner of the parent or grandparent of the sponsor, and only if they are applying at the same time as that parent or grandparent.

When two parents or two grandparents of a sponsor are applying together as adult dependent relatives, only one needs to show the need for long-term personal care.

UK Adult Dependent Relative Visa: Immigration Status After Arrival

The guidelines clearly differentiate on the issue of immigration status after arrival. An adult dependent relative of a British citizen or settled in the UK will be given settlement straight away.

Where the sponsor has temporary permission to stay only, the adult dependant relative is given temporary permission, which will be valid until the same expiry date as the sponsor’s permission. The relative can then apply for settlement or for extended leave to remain in line with the sponsor’s own immigration status.

The government also pointed out that there is a distinct route for adult dependants of British National (Overseas) status holders, which is provided for in Appendix Hong Kong British National (Overseas) and is not covered by these laws.
