Prime Minister announces new round of pylon projects
Andy Burnham is to hand homes £2,500 off energy costs over 10 years with a new discount. He will pay out to anybody living within 500m of pylons.
The Prime Minister of the Labour Party government has launched a series of new pylon projects. These include Bramford to Twinstead in East Anglia, the North London Reinforcement project and the Emmock substation in north east Scotland.
Renewable Energy and Power Infrastructure
This comes as the Government continues with repairs to the country’s ageing power infrastructure, which paves the way for new sources of renewable electricity generation to join to the network, enhancing energy security, cutting bills and fighting climate change.
Jackdaw and Rosebank Oil Fields
The move comes as the Labour Party government faces pressure over the Jackdaw and Rosebank oil fields. Areeba Hamid, co-executive director of Greenpeace UK, said: “Sections of the media just keep repeating myths and untruths.
We are in the middle of a fifth summer heatwave, there are wild fires across the country, oil and gas firms are making billions of dollars but the rightwing press and fossil fuel companies are demanding the go-ahead for Rosebank and Jackdaw. “Pure cognitive dissonance.”
Jackdaw Gasfield Jobs
Jackdaw, one of the largest remaining gasfields in the North Sea, would create just 27 direct full-time jobs, an environmental impact study submitted publicly by its owner, Adura, a joint venture between Shell and Norway’s Equinor, has shown.
The document states: ‘Over the lifetime of the field there would be a consistent level of employment averaging at nearly 500 jobs a year in direct, indirect and induced employment – this includes 273 direct jobs which exist on the Shearwater host installation and [an] additional 27 Jackdaw specific jobs’.
Fossil fuel cheerleaders have frequently justified new oil and gas operations by arguing that they are crucial for employment’, said Angharad Hopkinson, political campaigner at Greenpeace, which revealed the Jackdaw jobs statistic. When the developer’s own documents tell a totally different reality, those allegations are becoming more and more difficult to defend.”
Concerns Over North Sea Drilling
“It would be a mistake if the first thing Andy Burnham does as prime minister is to cave into the demands of the profiteering oil and gas industry,” said Tessa Khan, executive director of campaign group Uplift.
“These are companies that have made obscene profits, and our energy costs have exploded. “New North Sea drilling won’t take a penny off our bills, it will just make a few executives and their shareholders even richer. “
