Sainsbury’s £18 Healthy Start Boost 2026: A UK supermarket has announced a weekly bonus for shoppers in the run-up to Christmas. Sainsbury’s said it will be the first chain to bring back a £3 weekly top-up for consumers on the NHS Healthy Start initiative. Eligible low-income families will get up to £18 to use on healthy food over a six week period.

The offer will continue for six weeks starting Nov. 18. Sainsbury’s customers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will receive a £3 eGift card every week to spend in store or online on fruit, vegetables, beans and pulses, as well as fresh, frozen, canned and dried produce.

It’s accessible to families registered with the NHS Healthy Start scheme, which supports pregnant people and low-income families with children to buy healthy food. You need to have used the NHS Healthy Start Mastercard, topped up every four weeks, and a Nectar card in the same transaction within the last year to be eligible for the Sainsbury’s help.

Eligible clients have until 11.59pm on Monday, November 9 to apply. They’ll then receive an eGift card worth £3 by email for six weeks from Wednesday, November 18.

Sainsbury’s said “NHS Healthy Start is a government scheme that helps low-income families with young children across the UK purchase more healthy food through a free prepaid Healthy Start card that is automatically topped up with money every four weeks. “Sainsbury’s trialled a top-up to Healthy Start in 2021 – before the scheme moved to a prepaid card format – and saw a significant impact on shopping habits.

A study by the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics, in conjunction with IGD, showed that Sainsbury’s customers who used a top-up voucher bought on average 13 more servings of fruit and vegetables per basket than those who didn’t.

The change is part of a Sainsbury’s initiative to add thousands of tonnes of fibre and millions more pieces of fruit and vegetables to diets in the UK. The store has also rolled out new Full on Fibre branding on its items and continues to aim for cheap pricing.

“We know our customers want to get more fresh fruit, vegetables and fibre into family mealtimes,” said Sainsbury’s head of healthy and sustainable diets Nilani Srithran. We know how much a little extra support can help families on Healthy Start, with our previous top-up trial helping consumers buy an average of 13 more portions of fruit and veg every basket. That’s why, in the lead up to Christmas when family budgets sometimes come under extra pressure, we are bringing back our £3 weekly top-up. “I’d encourage anyone on the Healthy Start scheme to find out more.”

Minister of State for Public Health and Patient Safety, Dame Diana Johnson said: “Every child deserves the best start in life. That’s why this government is so committed to Healthy Start – helping families put healthy meals on the table. “I am really pleased to see this extra support being brought back by Sainsbury’s and I would encourage other retailers to follow suit, so that more families can benefit.

Anna Taylor, executive director at The Food Foundation, said: “It’s excellent to see Sainsbury’s offering such a large top up to Healthy Start, and being the first mover in what we hope will be industry wide assistance to individuals on the scheme.“This scheme reaches the most disadvantaged babies and toddlers in the country – and provides a vital nutritional safety net – but too many are missing out on its benefits at the moment which is why we think the scheme should be urgently expanded.”
