Know this before deciding to travel to the UK or from the UK. Airlines officially cleared by Government to cut flights as fuel crisis looms

UK carriers have been “given the green light” to cut or combine routes in order to conserve scarce jet fuel and keep summer operations predictable, writes The Guardian. Draft rules announced on 3 May would allow airlines to cancel flights at least two weeks in advance, or to combine more than one departure on the same routing, without losing the underlying airport slot.

Civil Aviation Authority chief executive Rob Bishton praised the flexibility, saying it will enable airlines to protect connection and give travellers time to re-plan.

Industry sources claim British Airways and easyJet have already simulated scenarios that would see 1-3 per cent of summer tickets cut – mostly off-peak rotations with alternate same-day choices.

The legislation follows a conference at the highest level between the transport secretary, Heidi Alexander, and senior executives from Heathrow, Gatwick, Virgin Atlantic and others. Delegates were told that European jet-fuel stockpiles had plummeted to their lowest level since 2017 and any further escalation in the Middle-East might produce a supply crisis within six weeks.

Consumer groups are widely backing the early cancellations, saying passengers who cancel more than 14 days before departure are not eligible to UK 261 cash payouts but do have rights to a refund or rerouting.

Travel insurance firms have started emailing corporate clients to clarify cover triggers and advise early check-in to prevent possible knock-on delays.

For mobility managers, the practical upshot is clear: lock in mission-critical travel now, check GDS schedule changes daily and build buffer time into itineraries, especially for multi-sector long-haul flights that rely on London hub connections.
