Introduction
UK Graduate Visa 2027: nThe UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) secretly provided a full update to its Graduate Route advice on 21 July, mirroring the Statement of Changes HC 259 published earlier in the month.
The updated pages state that master’s degree grads who apply on or after January 1, 2027 will get 18 months of unsponsored work permission, down from two years currently, while PhD graduates would still be eligible for three years.
The UKCISA update has new flow-charts for eligibility windows, and highlights the need for sponsoring universities to tell the Home Office about course completion before an application is made.
It also warns students who go beyond the ‘wrap-up’ period on their Student visa that they could be timed-out of the route altogether.
The guidance also expressly ties the length of the Graduate Route to upcoming evaluations of the UK employment market, indicating the possibility of further restriction.
With the reduced duration of permission, employers have less time to evaluate if graduate hires are worthy of being considered for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route.
HR teams should be planning for cohorts ending summer 2026 and 2027 and budgeting for earlier CoS allocation.
Universities are meanwhile under renewed pressure to speed up results processing so international students can make Graduate Route applications ahead of their Student leave expiry.
The update follows a wider drive by the Home Office to reduce net migration, including tougher English language rules for dependants and a planned review of settlement eligibility.
Mobility programmes that use the Graduate Route as a low-cost talent pipeline should brief business units today and think of enhanced campus-recruitment cycles in 2026.
UKCISA said it will host further explanatory webinars in August and is urging institutions to update internal FAQs to provide consistent advice during the busy autumn enrolment period.
