UK Settlement Policy Backlash: The government must drop the lengthening of the settlement term for migrant workers.
Staff from other countries constitute the backbone of public services.
Andrea Egan, the general secretary of UNISON, indicated today (Thursday) that the government is revisiting some parts of its modifications to the settlement period for foreign workers.
“Just making the harsh measures that were first suggested less harsh isn’t adequate. The plans need to be thrown away completely.
“They’re a nasty attack on migrant workers, who are the backbone of the NHS and social care system.” These are folks who do a lot to make society better for everyone.
“The measures are also bad for politics. They will probably turn off Labour’s progressive followers and won’t convince Reform supporters to change their minds.
“Labour should stop extending the qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain and instead focus on more radical ways to deal with the cost of living crisis.”
