The Home Office is looking into it after the BBC found that migrants were lying to stay in the UK.

The government is looking into reports from the BBC that some migrants are being told to lie about being LGBT or a victim of domestic abuse in order to stay in the nation.

No. 10 claimed there were “strong safeguards” in place to make sure that claims are “thoroughly and fairly evaluated.”

The Immigration Advice Authority and the Home Office are working together to make sure that “anyone who might abuse our immigration system is held accountable,” the prime minister’s spokesman said.

Opposition parties want the asylum system to be completely changed so that bogus claims don’t happen.

The Home Office was already investigating into a growing number of fraudulent claims from people who say they are LGBT, as well as worries that provisions meant to safeguard victims of domestic violence are being misused.

It is currently looking into the people and groups that the BBC’s reporting brought to light.

A BBC investigation has found that migrants whose visas are about to run out are being offered phoney cover stories and taught how to get fake documentation, such as letters of support, photos, and medical reports.

Some law companies and advisers are charging thousands of pounds to help migrants claim to be gay and afraid for their life if they go back to Pakistan or Bangladesh so they may ask for asylum.

The BBC has also found out that some migrants are taking advantage of laws that authorities put in place to enable real victims of domestic abuse get permanent residence faster than they might through other means, like asylum.

Some migrants have tricked British partners into dating and marrying them, then made up stories of domestic abuse after migrating to the UK.

The number of persons who say they are victims of domestic abuse and want to get fast-track residency has now grown to more than 5,500 a year, which is more than 50% more than three years ago.

The prime minister’s spokesman told reporters, “The Home Office and Immigration Advice Authority are looking into the BBC’s claims from yesterday and today to make sure that anyone who might be abusing our immigration system is held accountable.”It is disgusting and absolutely wrong to try to misuse laws that are meant to keep real victims safe from the horrors of domestic abuse. The home secretary has made it clear that those who try to trick the British people into staying in the UK will have their application denied and will be put on a one-way aircraft out of the country. If lawyers are found to be doing things that are against the law or not right, the regulatory authority will send them to the police.

The probe didn’t have a set time frame.

When asked if the PM was sure that claims were being closely looked at, the spokesman said, “The asylum system has strong protections in place, so every claim is carefully and fairly evaluated, abuse is actively uncovered, and these procedures are constantly reviewed to stop misuse.”

Gaon Hart, the Immigration Services Commissioner in charge of regulating immigration advisers, warned that a small number of advisers were hurting the reputation of the field and that there was “abhorrent abuse of the system.”He told BBC Radio 4’s Today program, “Wherever there is a chance for greed, there is and will be abuse, and we will be dealing with it.”

He claimed that a lot of enforcement actions happened last year after consumers complained about people giving bad advise or cheating the system.

He also said that the Home Office had sent cases to the authority after they had suspicions and was giving them more money to speed up investigations and prosecutions.

Hart, on the other hand, asked for “greater clarity and simplicity in the system” and urged more people to come forward and report any suspicions of wrongdoing.

Since Labour won office in 2024, a big goal has been to stop illegal immigration and make the asylum system more fair.

But it has to find a way to close loopholes while still safeguarding the weak.

Chris Philp, the Conservative shadow home secretary, said that the asylum system “must be completely overhauled” so that only people who are really being persecuted can get refuge.

Will Forster, the Liberal Democrat’s immigration and asylum spokesman, claimed that the BBC’s results were “abhorrent.” He went on to say, “We need an asylum system that is fair, controlled, and efficient.” Not the mess the Conservatives left us with.

Reform UK says that if the party gains power, it would make helping someone file a fake asylum claim a “strict liability” crime. This means that prosecutors wouldn’t have to establish intent, and the crime could get you up to two years in jail.

The Green Party, on the other hand, argued that the BBC’s coverage “gives an entirely false impression of a system that is, in reality, stacked against people seeking asylum” and made “the hostile environment” for this group even worse.
