UK Student Visa Crackdown 2026: UK universities are getting ready for a crackdown on visas as the number of students they can recruit drops sharply.

Half of UK universities think they will be identified by the Home Office’s new visa compliance system, which is a sign that the number of international students is still going down.

The British Universities International Liaison Association (Buila) did a survey and found that 70% of schools had fewer postgraduate students in January 2026 than in January 2025. The total number of students was down 31%, according to the Times newspaper.

Part of the drop is because of plans for stronger visa inspections and a new traffic-light system that will start in June to stop people from using study visas to get into the country.

To get “green” status, universities must keep their visa denial rates below 4%. Those who get a “amber” rating could face immediate penalties, such as limits on how many students they can hire.

Half of the universities that were asked stated they expect to get at least one rating that isn’t green, even though they are taking initiatives to lower their risk. These include hiring fewer people in nations where candidates are less likely to get visas.

The effects have been especially strong in South Asia. Around 82% of schools said that fewer students were coming from Pakistan, with some schools seeing a drop of up to 75%. 66% of universities in India and 65% of universities in Bangladesh similarly said they had fewer students.

Institutions have made it harder for candidates to get in by requiring more money up front, more thorough financial checks, and more credibility interviews.

Andrew Bird, the chair of Buila, said that universities support keeping the visa system fair, but he also claimed that the new approach is too harsh.

He remarked, “The UK already has one of the strictest student visa compliance systems in the world.” “But the rules constantly changing, and the traffic-light system is being used more strictly than it should be. An amber grade should be a warning, not a reason to punish someone.

There are also evidence that visa decisions are already getting stricter. Sixty percent of colleges and universities said that more students than usual were turned away for the January admission.

Buila wants UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to be more open, with clearer reasons for refusals and an early warning mechanism to enable institutions respond better.

Bird said that the present strategy could scare away real students and hurt the UK’s long-term competitiveness and standing in higher education around the world.
