PM Starmer Resigns

PM Starmer Resigns: Westminster is entering a period of political instability after the announcement of Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, beginning a fast-moving leadership battle with Andy Burnham as the strong favourite to take over.

Sir Keir said he no longer felt he was best placed to lead Labour into the next general election announcing his decision in Downing Street. He announced the King he was going to resign and set up a timetable for a leadership challenge, with nominations beginning on 9 July and finishing on 16 July.

He said he will stay on until the process is done and pledged a smooth transfer and complete backing for his successor.

Burnham Enters Commons With Growing Impetus

It was a momentous day at Westminster when Burnham was formally sworn in as an MP, to loud shouts from the Labour benches and some heckling from opposition MPs during proceedings in the House of Commons.

A gathering in Westminster Hall followed him, where about 200 Labour MPs were said to have posed for a jubilant image, a sign of the momentum building behind his leadership campaign.

Burnham, who won a landslide by-election in Makerfield, has subsequently declared he will stand for the Labour leadership. His candidature has shifted the contest, not least because former Health Secretary Wes Streeting publicly supported him as a unifying figure.

Effective Design Of Leadership Contest

Within Parliament, MPs spoke of a sense of an outcome already building. Several Labour figures privately said Burnham’s path to the leadership is becoming increasingly clear with little organised resistance so far apparent.

That means anyone wishing to stand will need the backing of 81 Labour MPs in order to get in the race – a figure that will determine whether anyone can officially enter the contest. At yet there is little sign of a rival campaign gathering steam, although MPs say this might still change before the mid-July deadline.

One Labour MP described the attitude as “expectation rather than competition”, with many already in the frame of mind of a Burnham-led government.

Political Consequences And Starmer’s Exit

Sir Keir’s term of office began with his election as Labour leader in April 2020 and his appointment as Prime Minister after the party’s overwhelming victory in July 2024.

In his resignation speech, he reflected on his time in government, noting employment rights, immigration policy and child poverty as important successes. He also defended his leadership, saying he had taken over a party needing a fundamental regeneration.

Conclusion

The resignation of Sir Keir Starmer has triggered a dramatic shift in British politics, with Andy Burnham emerging as the clear frontrunner in the Labour leadership race. As Westminster prepares for a transition of power, attention is now focused on the upcoming leadership contest and the possibility of a Burnham-led government shaping the UK’s political future.
