UK Student Visa Changes 2026: The United Kingdom (UK) will transition to electronic visas in 2026 and Nigerian applicants will no longer use physical visa stickers.
From January 2027 the post-study work period on the Graduate Route will be shortened from two years to 18 months for most graduates.
The monthly maintenance funds for student visa applicants in London have now increased to £1,483 per month.
In 2026, the United Kingdom (UK) introduced a set of changes to its immigration rules that have a direct bearing on Nigerian students who intend to study in the country or who are already studying in British universities.
Among other things, the modifications include visa types, post-study work entitlements, financial thresholds, English language requirements and dependent travel limitations.
eVisas are replacing physical stickers
From 25 February 2026, Nigerian nationals seeking for UK visit and student visas will be issued with an electronic immigration status rather than a physical sticker in their passport. Successful candidates will need to set up a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account to view and maintain their status.
Those with valid physical visa stickers do not need to change them and their visas stay valid till expiry.
Graduate route work term is being slashed
International students are now benefiting from the Graduate Route, which permits them to remain in the UK and work without employer sponsorship straight away. But starting of Jan. 1, 2027, bachelor’s and master’s grads will receive only 18 months on the Graduate Route, down from the current two years. PhD grads will still have access for three years, as they do now.
Students applying for their student visas before or on 31 December 2026 will continue to be entitled to apply for the two-year period after completion of the relevant bachelor’s or master’s programs.
UK student visa: Increased financial thresholds
Students now need to demonstrate that they can meet monthly living expenditures of £1,483 if studying in London or £1,136 if studying outside London. The money must be in the applicant’s bank account for 28 consecutive days prior to the visa application being submitted.
This does not include tuition fees, which have must be calculated individually.
There are still travel restrictions in place
Most students on taught postgraduate courses are still unable to bring spouses or children to the UK under rules implemented in 2024.
Usually only people on postgraduate research programs or PhD courses can bring dependants, according to the applicable restrictions.
Students on taught master’s programs should not presume that their families will qualify for dependant visas.
English language pub relaxed for job routes
The English language requirement for the Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual and Scale-up pathways will increase from B1 to B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages from 8 January 2026.
This higher criteria applies to students wishing to convert from the Graduate Route to a Skilled Worker visa once they have completed their studies.
International student tax looms
The UK government has suggested that institutions who sponsor overseas students should pay a charge of £925 per year of study for each international student. The charge is not set to come into effect until August 2028 but prospective students should keep an eye on the situation since institutions may build the additional cost into future tuition rates.

UK: Countries not need to show proof of funds
People from more than 60 countries and territories including the UAE, Australia, the United States and a number of African countries are subject to what the government calls the ‘differential evidence requirement’.
